Malta and the United Kingdom have an excellent relationship that has existed for decades. It engulfs not only the political and economic spheres shared by the two countries, but embodies a deep friendship as well. In the 1800s the British helped Malta expel the French, and remained under their protection for 150 years. Their closeness can be seen in many aspects of Maltese life. As you will walk through the streets you see the English influence everywhere. Shop names, products sold, and even types of dress. English is the primary language, “fish & chips” is a favorite food, and they even send the Queen a birthday card!
